Grandpa’s Tips for Buying and Selling Antiques

Author: adam

Most people imagine that the word “antique” speak about only older generations. And that, only oldies are fascinated in or have the required aptitude, knowledge, skill and expertise about antiques and everything related to it. But in realism, the scene is much different.

Nearly every antique owner shows the signs of being attracted towards antique from quiet juvenile age. So, it’s not all fair to say that, only senior populace are antiques lover and devotee. Though, they may hold the majority. It’s evident that they’ve spent their whole life in becoming a classic antiques possessor.

It’s on the part of this generation to inculcate the hobby and passion for such timeless legacy. As their parents and grandparents encouraged and advised them, so should they, pass this wisdom to their children and grandchildren. As, only with their effort and endeavor, the upcoming age band will realize and grasp the qualities of dealing with antiques.

Like for anything else, buying and selling antiques, requires certain rules and regulations and convention. One must not blindly buy each and every crap that one find anywhere and everywhere. But follow and take precautions in buying antiques, as one does, when buying anything other thing. So, here are cautions, measurements, warnings and the points to keep in mind before entering into the gallery of antiques:

1) Haste makes wastes: Be a very patient buyer, while buying any antique object. As any speedy decision may lead to great risks and you leave your bank balance nil.

2) Hot pockets: Taking a clue from above, have your pockets really hot. Even a modest antique article may cost you to spend huge bucks. So, always take out more than enough money while seeking for an antique.

3) Cunning trader: be careful from cunning and pseudo antique shopkeepers. You must have the eagle’s eye to recognize and classify between a genuine and illusory dealer. They sell anti-antique articles and may even induce and compel you to buy bogus item that too at a higher price.

4) Keen eye: have that eagle’s eye while buying antiques. Know before hand what is the article that you searching for and what’s the lowest price for it. As you don’t know when or where you may find your pick. Traveling is also quiet crucial if you want to own a fine antique collection. Try to dig up antique stuff from variety of places.

5) Legitimate: The most essential factor. Always and always check the authenticity and genuineness of any such article that you buy. Look for the original date and place of manufacture. Plus always, take a careful and watchful look at the object from every and different angles. See that it’s not defected or broken from somewhere.

6) Specialists: you needn’t be a top class expert to buy an antique. Always take guidelines suggestion, tips, tricks, and ask for precautions and rules to follow while buying antiques from experts. These experts gurus are helpful in buying real antique articles at real prices

These are some the rules which can direct and show the way even in the long run, if followed attentively and with some brain too. Trading and assembling antiques is a life long process. Keep searching for pleasant and classic antique objects in your in your day to day life also. A keen eye and penchant for antiques will help you find more collectibles than there are!

A Stiffel Lamps Decorating Guide

Author: Mark Clifton

The Stiffel lamp is among the most common and recognizable lamps you'll ever see. Looking around your home right now, chances are you have at least one, probably more. Their functionality is matched only by their versatility, as Stiffel lamps can be used in almost any setting and design pallet. Whether the style is contemporary, classic, eclectic or specifically themed, there is a good chance that a Stiffel lamp can fit in with the design.

The key to choosing the right Stiffel lamp and placing it in just the right location is to first pinpoint exactly what you are planning to use it for. Is this going to be accent lighting that helps the larger light fixtures by brightening a dark corner, or will this lamp be the primary light source in the room? There is also task-oriented light fixtures that are specifically placed to illuminate a particular piece of artwork or a chair that you frequently sit in to read. There are different Stiffel lamps for all of these uses and more.

For accent lighting, a smaller Stiffel lamp is usually best. You don't want it to overpower the room and become the main attraction. If the back of your sofa is exposed, try putting a small table behind it and a Stiffel lamp for accent light. It can also be useful for reading on the sofa. Any lighting that you are planning to read by should be positioned behind and above the reader for the greatest amount of light to reach the right place. Instead of a small Stiffel lamp on a table behind the sofa, you can use a tall floor lamp just as easily.

Stiffel lamps are not just for decorating the home. They can be used to add more light to your office and make it a little more comfortable. Most offices have white halogen lighting. Not that there is anything wrong with halogen, but it may be a nice break for your eyes to bring in lighting that is not so white. For a professional atmosphere, you can use a Stiffel lamp with a clean, simple appearance without compromising the comfortable, at-home feeling you brought it in for in the first place.

Depending on the size of your office, how big your desk is and what type of furniture is already there, you can use a table or a floor lamp. Floor lamps are usually best unless you have a very large desk that can accommodate the size and shape of a Stiffel lamp, which can crowd a desk if the shade is too big. A floor lamp next to your desk or in the corner is a nice touch. As far as color, again this will depend on what is already there. However, generally grey metal and white shades go nicely with most offices. If yours is more old-fashioned with a lot of cherry wood and leather, then a Stiffel lamp with a wood, copper or gold colored base can work great too.

With all of the styles, sizes and different types of Stiffel lamps, they will fit in almost anywhere you put them. They're great on end tables on either side of the couch or bed. Floor Stiffel lamps can be used behind your favorite reading chair, in a dark corner or right next to the front door where it can be switched on as soon as you walk in. For anyone with an apartment, often they do not come furnished with light fixtures and you must supply your own. A few strategically placed Stiffel lamps will make you forget you don't have built-in lighting. These are just a few of the ways that you can brighten up a room and add a touch of style with minimal expense and very little effort.

Sports Memorabilia Value: What’s it Really Worth?

Author: Larry Levine

“I have a Derek Jeter autographed baseball. How much is it worth?” We hear this question all the time.  Everybody wants to know how much money they can get for their sports memorabilia. Unfortunately, it's not that simple to determine.

The short answer is, and the answer that many sports memorabilia dealers tell their customers, is that your sports memorabilia is worth what someone is willing to pay you for it! Although this answer is simple enough, there is a way to determine the value of an item.  It may not be what we can sell the item for, but we certainly can find out what similar items have sold for.

Let's take the Derek Jeter autograph baseball as an example.  We are at Yankee Stadium and Jeter is signing autographs on the rail before the game. We toss him a ball, and low and behold, he signs it. It's our lucky day! We happened to be in the right place at the right time.  We now own Derek Jeter autograph baseball.

What's it worth?

When we get home from  the game,  the first thing we do is check the internet to see if we can find a value for our new prized possession. We go to our favorite search engine, type in "Derek Jeter autograph baseball" and, needless to say,  we get the phone book. There are literally thousands of sites that have this.

We do some more searching and click on to Steiner Sports.  Now Steiner is one of the largest memorabilia companies around, are based in New York, and do exclusive signings with Derek Jeter.  They sell Derek Jeter autographed baseballs for $500 each. Does that mean my ball worth $500?

Lets continue.

Next stop, a sports memorabilia store that sell Jeter autographed baseballs for $399. In fact, this company is a Steiner authorized distributor, the ball is authenticated by Steiner, and is the exact same item that Steiner sells for  more.  So is my ball worth $399?

Not so fast, lets move on.

On to EBay. Here we find a very wide range of Derek Jeter autographed baseballs from many different types of sellers.  Some have COA's from Steiner, some from PSA/DNA, some from Joe's Baseball Card Emporium, and some that have no COA's at all.  Selling prices are all over the board, from as low $50 in some cases, to over $900 in others.  We don't even know if half of these are real.

At this point we are totally confused. How can there be such a price difference for the same Derek Jeter autographed baseball? Well the answer my friends, is that they are not all the same!  There are many factors that determine the value of similar items. Two of the most important factors are condition of the item and  authenticity.

When  you pay top dollar from a company like Steiner Sports for an autograph baseball, you get a brand new, snow white baseball, with a strong, smudge free Derek Jeter penned signature on the sweet spot. It is a top condition ball.  If you pay less, you usually get less. A Derek Jeter autographed baseball signed on a dirty or soiled ball, or one that is signed on a side panel, or one where the autograph is fading, is certainly going to be worth much less.

The same is true about authenticity.  If you are not sure that the ball has actually been hand signed by that player, it is worthless. Because of their reputation, a Derek Jeter autograph with a Steiner Sports COA is the best you can do. They witness every ball signed.  You can't beat that unless you see the player sign the item yourself, which is impractical in most cases. Other companies, such as Mounted Memories, Tri-Star, and UDA are reputable as well and their authenticity is not questioned in the industry.  Reputation and integrity of the company or individual standing behind the product is more important than the product itself. That is why some people will pay top dollar for their items,  because they know that it's real.

So how does my ball compare with these.  Well, it was a new ball before the game, but after Jeter signed it, he threw it back to me and I dropped it and it got a little dirty.  Plus my friend got some mustard from his hot dog on it.  Oh yea, Jeter signed it on the side panel with a sharpie, but I did witness it.  Although who's going to believe me if I want to sell it. But I still want to know what's it worth?

The answer. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it!

Patek Philippe Calatrava Watch

Author: Ron Aldo

Whoever has heard of Patek Philippe and his marvelous collection of watches for both men and women knows that his timepieces have always charmed the lovers of the horology art. The longevity and reliability of these watches is the result of the innovative spirit that has constantly reined the company and its workshops. Thus the main preoccupation of Patek Philippe is to create reliable, high-quality watches no matter how long it takes to control the final product. These watches undergo several tests that last up to one month (depending on the type of movement) and only then are they ready for customers.

Just like any other famous watch-making company, Patek Philippe has certain features. They are responsible for having created the first crown wound pocket watch (1839) and the first wrist watch that the world had ever seen (1868). Moreover, Patek Philippe is the only Geneva manufacturer to receive the Geneva Seal (the highest official quality distinction in the watch-making industry) for its mechanical movements. Also, among the one hundred most expensive watches that have ever been sold at auction, eighty were Patek Philippe.

There are several Patek Philippe lines that are famous around the world but the Calatrava is probably the most popular of all. Round-shaped with an exquisite porcelain white dial and Roman numerals, the Patek Philippe Calatrava Watches come in hand wound, mechanical or quartz movements. The classic shape and the hobnail bezel make this collection simple and elegant. Both men's and women's Calatrava watches are resistant to water (80 feet) and feature an 18-karat gold case and different straps.

Whether you look at the yellow, rose or white gold Calatrava watches, you will find it very difficult to choose. They are all extremely elegant watches, suitable to any special occasion but also on the wrist of a smartly-dressed executive in his or her usual working hours at the office.

The Patek Philippe Calatrava watches are the result of an avant-garde philosophy of aesthetics and the creator's pursuit of perfection, which has given birth to a series of exquisitely designed watches. They are durable timepieces which may be transmitted form generation to generation and still be elegant and up-to-date after many years. With hobnail patterns of wide polished bezels, the Calatrava collection of watches bear the characteristics and style of the remarkable Patek Philippe creations which have enchanted us for decades.

The ladies Calatrava watches are as classy as those for men, smaller and lighter but having the same personality and elegance as their counterparts. The ladies' classic mechanical Calatrava timepiece with Officer Style case and small seconds, available in both white and yellow gold, with a sapphire crystal case back, has a case diameter of 31 mm and is water resistant to 30 meters. Its dial with guilloched silvery center and white mother-of-pearl surround has diamond hour markers and Breguet-style numerals. The alligator strap with large rectangular scales, available in shiny chocolate brown (for the yellow gold watch) and shiny navy blue (for the white gold one) complements the watch and enhances its style and elegance.

Caring For Velvet Furniture Upholstery

Author: Jessica Whittaker

Velvet-covered furniture is some of the most elegant upholstered furniture available. Velvet is luxurious and can add richness and a touch of class to any décor. Unfortunately, it also attracts fuzz and can be difficult to clean without robbing it of its wonderful texture. How should you care for your velvet furniture to keep it looking its best?

Velvet loses its sheen for many reasons. Stains and moisture wreak havoc on the elegant fabric. Excess fuzziness and overuse also contribute to velvet's diminished appearance. Luckily, there are ways to overcome all of these challenges and breathe new life into your velvet furniture.

Spills happen - especially if you have kids or pets. If something gets spilled on your velvet upholstery, don't panic. The best thing you can do is take a clean, super-absorbent cloth or paper towel and soak up the excess liquid. Don't dab or rub the spill, as this will force the liquid deeper into the fibers. Instead, leave the cloth in place until most or all of the liquid has been absorbed. Then air-dry the fabric, or use a blow-dryer on a very low setting to dry it out.

For more persistent stains, add a small amount of dish washing detergent to a half cup of water, and shake it well. Use only the resulting suds to clean the stain. Be careful not to rub too vigorously. Also, blot well between applications of the soap suds.

Maybe stains and spills aren't a problem, but your velvet is still looking a little matte. In this case, steamers and dry brushes are your friends. In order to fluff up the velvet fibers and have them looking new again, use the steamer against the direction of the pile. Then take a dry brush (you can find ones specifically designed for use with furniture) and brush the velvet in the opposite direction. Once the pile is all going the same way again, you should notice that the formerly matted area matches the rest of the upholstery.

Fuzz and wrinkles are common complaints from velvet furniture owners. Vacuums are handy for lint, fuzz and pet hair removal. Most of these devices come with attachments that are designed for use on upholstery. If your vacuum is a bit Spartan, try stretching a pair of nylons over the nozzle. You'll suck up all the fuzz and debris without damaging your velvet. For wrinkles, use a steamer rather than an iron. Velvet is too delicate to stand up to ironing. Steaming is a gentle way to relax the folds in the fabric.

If your velvet furniture sees regular use, it might be looking a little bare in some spots. One part of being a great velvet furniture owner is knowing when to call in the professionals. If your furniture has spots or bare patches that you can't remove, it might be time for a professional cleaning - or reupholstering.

Velvet is a beautiful fabric that requires a little bit of extra attention. Most velvet furniture owners feel that the extra care is worth it. After all, nothing says style like velvet upholstery.

Stores Like Pottery Barn

Author: Frederick Ware

Leading home furnishing company Pottery Barn, founded in 1949 and purchased by Williams-Sonoma, Inc. In 1986, is not without competition. There are stores like Pottery Barn selling the same line of product using an approach which has been its own trademark for the past decades: moderate pricing joined with aggressive sales promotion.

Founded in 1962, Pier 1 Imports now runs a chain of more than 1,200 stores thru the US, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico and employs around 16,700 people. It focuses on home furniture, decors and accessories. The company is based in Forth Worth, Texas. Pier 1 Imports used to operate a retail concept that competed against Pottery Barn Kids-called Pier 1 Kids-but made a decision to stop its operations in September 2007.

Stores Like Pottery Barn

Cost Plus

Cost Plus derived its name from its initial retailing concept of "cost plus 10%." Since opening its first store in San Francisco, California in 1958, Cost Plus has expanded to 270 stores located in thirty states. It began as a rattan furniture store and quickly grew into an exclusive retailer of imported product. Industry executives and patrons alike by and large deem Cost Plus as similar to Pier 1 Imports, without the top-end merchandise.

Crate & Barrel

It acquired home furnishings immediately from factories in Europe and built its business reputation on the beauty, durability and reasonable costs of such imports. It's a methodology that remains central to its retailing philosophy till now, even though it has also begun importing from Thailand, Mexico and India too. The Crate & Barrel chain now contains 170 stores in the United States. It also runs CB2 which is concentrated on children, and The Land of Nod which caters to children.

There are other stores like Pottery Barn. Check them when you are bargain hunting. Competition is a great thing.

Start Making Quilted Postcards

Author: Penny Halgren

Quilted postcards are a nice change to regular greeting cards. In addition, you'll be sharing your craft with others.

Quilted postcards are a unique alternative to a traditional paper greeting card. By sending a quilted card, you will be sharing your craft, giving something truly unique and saving paper which is important to many people who are vowing a "greener" life as a resolution for the coming year.

Quilted postcards are perfectly fine to send through the United States postal system. There are a few regulations you have to meet. Check with your local post office to learn the dimensions that are allowable and the current postage cost. Remember to use a permanent marker that will not smear when writing the addresses on fabric. Also, print clearly to make reading the addresses easier for the postal carrier.

Looking for ideas? Try these blocks for your quilted postcard needs:

Birthdays: cupcake with a candle appliqué block, a flower block, or a favorite theme (such as cars, fishing, etc.), any traditional pattern with birthday theme fabric

Wedding anniversaries: a wedding ring block, a photo block using a photo of the recipients, or a traditional favorite of the recipient

Baby themes: any traditional pattern in pastels, appliqué blocks such as Sunbonnet Sue or Overall Sam, any custom appliqué idea to match the new baby's nursery

Missing You: any traditional pattern in any color scheme

Here are a few monthly ideas to get you started:

January: snowmen, snowflakes, "happy New Year" block

February: Valentine hearts, flowers

March: clovers, any traditional pattern in spring colors

April: Easter basket, bunny themes, umbrellas for "April showers"

May: flowers for Mother's Day, any traditional block in spring colors for all occasion cards

June: traditional blocks in masculine colors for Father's day, theme postcards like fishing, hunting, etc.

July: patriotic designs, traditional designs in summer colors

August: back to school themes such as apples, school houses

September: traditional blocks in fall colors

October: Halloween pumpkin postcards (try using ghosts and other goblins, too), candy corn, witch blocks, traditional blocks in seasonal prints and colors

November: turkeys and praying hands for Thanksgiving, turkey in the straw design, election theme, bread basket design, patriotic designs and colors for Veterans' Day

December: holiday designs for Christmas and Hanukah such as star patterns, candle patterns, wreaths, trees and any traditional pattern in seasonal colors and patterns

There's no limit to the types of quilted postcards you can create. Look for online quilt block libraries to get even more ideas. Why not get together with other quilting friends to start a quilted postcard program? Make and send them to members of our military. Send your cards to hospitalized children, or find another group of people who might need some cheering up. Join forces with www.fabric-postcards.com. It's a great way to share your love of quilting with others and a great way to make someone happy with your hobby.

The great part about making quilted postcards is that it's a wonderful way to use those scraps you have lying around. Less fabric will go to waste! And while many paper cards end up in the trash after a couple of weeks, your quilted postcard is sure to be kept as a priceless memento and might even be found hanging on a wall or sitting on a desk for quite some time.

Make sharing your love for quilting a New Year's resolution. What better way to share it than by sending quilted postcards instead of the usual paper cards? You'll love making them and just might encourage another friend to pick up the hobby as well!

How To Decorate Your Dining Room With An Asian Inspired Theme

Author: Lee Dobbins

Deep reds and golds inspire appetite and good conversation so what better way to decorate your dining room then with an Asian inspired theme!

Even if you don't have a professional designer you can get an Asian inspired look in your dining room by changing little things, for example adding a wallpaper border and coordinating your tableware and serving dishes to give an exotic Asian look to the room. Don't be timid to change things like your floor coverings, lighting, decorative accessories and wall color in conjunction with your table and chair set and sideboard.

Decorative items are key to pulling your Asian inspired look together. Even if you can't replace any other items - you can get a new look by changing the decorative accessories! Focus on shopping for tableware, serving dishes and table cloths and runners, in colors and patterns that match your Asian look. You'll be amazed at how easy and economical it is, and what a huge difference these changes make! You might want to include a rice paper folding screen or Shoji doors combined with Asian style potted plants and you could even try some exotic knick knacks like geisha girl figures or anything with an Asian look to add some punch to your dining room. Adding more touches such as a beautiful silk kimono hung on the wall can make your room look like it was done by an interior designer.

Flooring can make or break your decor, but if you can not pay for new flooring in your dining room then you can mask your existing floors by using small rugs with an Asian flair. If you are lucky enough to be able to afford new floors, check out dark hardwood floors or bamboo flooring. Accent them with oriental rugs or bamboo mats for an authentic look.

An important factor when decorating your dining room with an Asian inspired look is your wall color. For this look the colors can really enhance the feel - you should consider adding reds and muted tones with contrasting woods either as wallpaper or paint. Try using a deep red paint on the walls, or you might consider a lighter colored paint or wallpaper in plain pattern. You don't have to get too fancy or spend a lot of money and if you don't want color on the walls, you can always cover the walls in a neutral palette and put the color into your flooring and accents.

You don't have to buy a coordinating table and chair set, sideboard, and hutch but the dining room should have plenty of sleek and elegant furniture. To really showcase the Asian theme, try furniture with a black lacquer finish or a quality rattan set.

Window treatments can have a large effect on your Asian inspired design theme. To put together a magnificent look in your dining room try hanging silk drapes with or without embroidery or silk fabric valances with sheers. For a less formal look, you could try bamboo shades that roll up.

Lighting is an important element in your home and the dining room is no exception. To compliment your Asian inspired decorating style, you will want to keep in mind the style of the fixtures as well as the type. When you are incorporating an Asian style, you would want to take a look at making use of plain overhead lighting with accent lighting with silk or puffed paper shades, crystal chandeliers or exotic lamps but try to shy away from anything that has a country style.

One decorating area that is often ignored when decorating your house is the wall space. Even the ugliest walls can be made to look good with great accessories and wall art. Try adding Asian silk paintings hung in vintage frames or block prints to your dining room walls to enhance the exotic appeal of your Asian Interior Design. You can even add a nice Asian folding screen in the corner with a large oriental plant in front of it for depth and appeal.

Getting a nice Asian look in your dining room can be as basic as just buying new decorative accessories or as involved as doing a total room remake. Either way, attention to the fine details and making sure to coordinate your accessories and furniture will help you accomplish a wonderful new Asian inspired style that will make dining at home a new experience!

Canvas Prints or Oil Painting Reproductions

Author: TravisOl

With walls hung with paintings and canvases is a big part of what makes your home attractive and a super place to live in. These hanging prints can when carefully selected become an excellent collection of their own, and therefore it can be with great pride that you show off your accommodation. As a connoisseur of art you might be wondering what the difference is between art prints and oil painting reproductions. One who is not acquainted with it may thing there is no difference between the two terms. They often are used interchangeably, but their meanings can differ greatly. If you want to buy these art reproductions it is significant that you know the difference.

Canvas Art Prints
This up-to-date technology for fine art or photograph reproductions uses a high-quality inkjet printer creating individual copies of any one image or images. That is why canvas art prints are identical copies of the genuine work of art. This printing process is like that of making a photocopy of a hand-written letter instead of rewriting it. Reproducing art by this photomechanical process is now very popular. Artists themselves often use canvas printing to create some copies of their own work which they sell on in limited additions. This special method is used to multiply copies of the best paintings and provide a lot of people with ample opportunity to contemplate their beauty.

Oil Painting Reproductions
Oil painting reproductions cannot be absolutely identical copies of original works of art, because they are recreated by hand. Someone other than the original artist analyses the original and paints a closely matching replica. Using oil paints and painting on canvas skilled artists try to replicate an exact copy of the originals. For those people who really know a great deal about their subject can spot the difference at a glance. Oil painting reproductions are similar to listening to your favourite songs not being sung by the original singer.

A piece of advice
In brief, art reproductions are actual paintings, but not only by the original artists. Prints are copies of the original works. Both oil art reproduction and canvas art print can be called reproductions but the first can’t be a print. Both methods of recreation deserve your attention but it is up to you to decide what kind of reproduction you like the most and want to purchase. As the word "reproduction" may sound confusing it is better to ask questions before buying a painting to be sure that you're getting the right type of "copy". If you want real paintings without a high investment, reproductions are just the right thing. They are often preferred over prints when used in decor because they are usually very affordable. If you're looking to invest for future profits or to build a collection, but buying an original painting is unrealistic, canvas prints are the next best thing.
