Antique Lamp - a Rare Yongzhen Jar Table Lamp

Author: Maurice Robertson

There is a point at which art can become practical and we illistrate this with a rare, early 18th century jar and cover as a lamp.

This little jar and cover was produced at the famous Imperial kilns at Jingdezhen in Chinas Jiangxi Province. The major output of the kilns was to supply porcelains of fine quality for the Emperor, the Imperial family and the court circles.

Chinese Jar and Cover lamp Circa 1735

"A very fine and early, 18th century Chinese Yongzhen period jar and cover as a table lamp. The jar and cover enamelled in a very pretty, harmonious combination of pastel colours.  The Yongzhen reign is renowned for this pastel palette and this is a very lovely example.

Both sides of the jar with white reserves very delicately painted with Chinese antiques, flower filled vases, Buddhist text, an altar offering of a large fruit filled dish and a smoking sensor in a butter yellow.  The ground of the jar and cover decorated with a formal floreat design.  The ground, pale mauve, the floreat design, a pastel lime green.  The rim and base of the jar with a segmented border in pastel lemon and sky blue.

The decorative pastel palette of enamels including orange, turquoise, green and touches of red.  The low drum shaped cover of the same style.  The decoration of this jar and cover of Imperial quality.  The jar and cover on a turned maple wood stand, water gilded.  As this jar and cover is free standing, it can be removed from the stand at any time."

The jar and cover in perfect condition." Circa 1723-1735

Overall height (including shade) 17"/43cm

Most of what we know about this “porcelain city“ comes to us from the letters of Pere d’Entrecolle, a French Jesuit missionary who travelled to China at the end of the 17th century. He detailed what he saw in a long series of letters written between 1712-1722.

He described in detail the vast factory and kilns at Jingdezhen.

He tells us of how the “kilns roared all night and how the town was illuminated by the flames from the vast number of ovens”.

This enormous Imperial production was ultimately overseen by the Emperor, Yongzhen, who ruled from the dragon throne from 1723 until his death in 1735.

The Yongzhen Emperor was the first true art-lover from among the long Qing dynasty of Manchu rulers. He passionately cared for and lived with works of art.

The Emperor knew many of his artisans by name and it is well known that he rewarded creations that he considered outstanding.

The Yongzhen reign is attributed with the development of a wide range of pastel colours (or enamels, when referring to ceramics).   It is this delicate palette of colours which decorate our subject.

This style of lamp has, of course, a rather impressive list of benefits:-

1.  A functional table lamp.

2.  An antique work of art, complete with it’s original low drum shaped cover, even 270 years later!

3. An asset which will continue to add to its value.

4.  A constant visual pleasure.

5. Table lamps are not meant to illuminate a room as per overhead lighting, but are selectively placed to provide a softer pool of light accentuating and complimenting the décor and “feeling” of a room.

Guide to Antique Chair

Author: Masni Rizal Mansor

An antique chair can bring a unique decorative touch to your home without a big price tag. But transforming a worn-out piece into the treasure you see underneath takes a little time and just a little knowledge.

Stripping

The first step is to strip off all the old finish adhering to the wood of the antique chair. Now, some antique dealers will say to never strip off a finish. But logically, if a piece is in awful shape, you have got to do something to clean it up. So for a compromise, take very old, unique or fine pieces to a professional restorer. Take care of common pieces yourself.

So, first, strip the wood. With commercially available stripper, you will be able to dissolve and scrape off old layers of paint and varnish. You may have to work through several layers of finishes. If your antique chair has lots of carving, get a toothbrush or a wire brush to really clean out small crevices.

An antique chair will have to undergo at least one treatment with stripper, usually more. The best stripper is a thin paste. Apply it to wood surfaces, let it dissolve into the finish for about fifteen minutes, then scrape it off. Repeat as many times as necessary.

Sanding

Once all the old paint and finishes have been removed from your antique chair, you must sand it all over. This cleans and evens the wood’s surface so that it can accept your new finish evenly. This job goes a lot faster with a small electric sander with fine paper. Use a drill with different size sanding bits to get in the smallest details of the carving. No power tool, no problem though. Use sanding blocks – sponges coated with a sanding surface. They can squeeze and fit over any contour more easily that plain sand paper.

Getting Finished

So now the antique chair is smooth, clean, and dry. Now you get to pick the next step: what to refinish it with.

Pick either wood stain or paint. Wood stain comes in many colors and “dyes” the wood but allows the grain to show through. You can get standard wood colors from light brown to black or any other color you want. Paint is opaque and can have a glossy or matte finish.

Put on one layer of your refinishing solution, and wait a night before putting on the next layer. Put three coats if you really want. Then finish off with a paint sealant, and there is a good-as-new antique chair.

Glass Door Knobs: Bringing Beauty Into Your Homes

Author: Steven Magill

Glass door knobs normally could be found in antique homes. It sparkles like diamonds when light hits them. Most people love to have an antique home since it has this particular depth in it and history could be known just by seeing at the designs of the house.

Glass door knobs are so fragile and that homeowners should put extra care to it since they are, of course, made out of glass. It should not be banged around and treated roughly. They don't survive in harsh conditions nor should they be put outside. Once placed outside, there is a huge possibility that it would crack or break due to excessive hot or cold weather.

But if you could notice, these days, people switch from having glass door knobs to metal door knobs and this is due to two reasons: fragility and price. Glass door knobs, as mentioned above, is very fragile. You need to take care of it the right way otherwise it would get destroyed easily. Second reason is the fact that it is quite expensive since glass door knobs are works of art and the design is very distinct compared to metal door knobs.

It may come pricey but the beauty of glass door knob should not be missed as they not only have a stunning look but it also captures a period of American history. It is rich in beauty and elegance which puts people in awe as they see it. Before, people were having a hard time trying to search for glass door knobs but at this time, there are already a lot of manufacturers who make beautiful glass door knobs which is perfect for antique homes. Not just that, since the demand of glass door knobs is rising, more and more people make it and so it is now quite affordable compared to the past years.

You could find it in the nearest hardware around your area. You could talk to the person in charge and ask questions about it. You need to know the kind of design you have in mind and make sure if it fits your door as well as the design of your house. Now, if you think you're too busy to shop around, you could always check on designs through the internet. The internet is such a powerful tool in researching for glass door knobs designs and you won't have to hassle yourself in going to the hardware and be swamped with other customers.

Lamps in Antique Blue and White

Author: Maurice Robertson

Chinese blue and white porcelain has always been a favorite with collectors, but we need to go to the long history of China to find the beginning of blue and white’s popularity. It was as early as the 9th century when the first or, prototype blue and white was fired during the Tang dynasty.  But we need to fast forward to the early 14th century when the production of fine translucent blue and white porcelain began at the Imperial kilns at Jingdezhen.  Jingdezhen was sometimes known as the porcelain capital of China, although at this time and for the following 300 years, it in fact was the porcelain capital of the world, as it was not until the early 18th century that porcelain began to be experimentally made in Saxony.

It was Persia which originally supplied the “Persian blue” to the Chinese porcelain makers; it was, of course, cobalt oxide which put the blue in blue and white!  Cobalt was one of the valuable commodities traded along the famous Silk Road and was of such importance to the Chinese that it was traded for bolts of pure silk.

The great European love affair with Chinese blue and white was started by the Portuguese in the 16th century.  It was eventually taken over by the Dutch who were the great shippers of Chinese ceramics to the West.  The love affair still retains its passion with blue and white still as popular as ever.

Interior lighting is a most important element in decoration and can influence the “mood” of a room in a variety of ways, by example, soft romantic lighting.

Table lamps offer “that something extra” providing a refined and finished look to an interior.  Blue and white with its bright, cobalt blue and bright white always keeps its fresh, clean look.  A blue and white room is a sight to behold and how better lit than with blue and white lamps.

The history of the Tiffany Lamp

Author: Richard Gazzo

Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of the founder Charles Lewis Tiffany of Tiffany and Co. jewelers was born in New York City and first launched their business in 1878. With a combination of skills and craftsmanship in painting, interior design, traveler, photographer, collector, manufacture and artistic gardener, Tiffany had an unlimited range and versatility when it came to art.

Tiffany always appreciated fine art and wanted to carry on that appreciation through his stained-glass work. Tiffany used pieces of discarded glass from production of the stained glass windows and recycled them by fitting hundreds of hand-cut glass shapes into bronze and copper foil enclosures, designing gorgeous lamps of all shapes, sizes, styles and colors which included the nautilus, dragonfly and Tyler scroll. An exquisite addition to any area in your home, Tiffany lamps not only illuminates your room but also acts as a centerpiece of art.

As it says in company history, Tiffany met up with Thomas Edison in 1885 and developed decorative stage lighting as well as electrical fixtures to complete the Tiffany lamps. After patenting four new types of incompatible glass including Favrile-glass, the exclusive Tiffany team of designers and craftsmen continued to create beautiful works of art in the glass window and lighting industry.

In 1913 the Tiffany Company introduced a new kind of glass, Tiffany linen-fold, which is used exclusively for lampshades. It was then that Louis C. Tiffany retired from active participation in his company, but retains title of President

Tiffany lamps have been categorized by various geometric characteristics including the irregular upper and lower borders lamps, favrile lamps, geometric lamps, transition to flowers, flowered cone lamps, flowered globe and irregular lower border lamps.

Today you can purchase beautiful Tiffany ceiling fixtures, floor and table lamps, stained glass-widows and wall sconces to decorate your home in an ornate and stylish way that will definitely impress anyone who enters your rooms. Other styles to choose from include, American Flag designs, Pansy, Peacock, Jeweled Geometric Iris, Jasmine, Garden, Fleur D'Lis, Cabbage Rose and 'Animal designs of lighting.

Although Tiffany died at age 85 in 1933, the memorable and unique designer Tiffany name lives on through decorating a number of private homes and public spaces for stars like Mark Twain, Cornelius Vanderbilt and the US Presidential White House and will continue to decorate homes for years to come. Tiffany and Tiffany & Co. are registered trademarks of Tiffany and Company.

Fenton Carnival Glass

Author: Ross Bassette

The popularity of collecting Carnival Glass has resurged in recent years. Contemporary pieces are readily available at cheap prices. However, the vintage Carnival Glass is really what is popular with collectors. To offer you some useful information on this American art form, I will discuss the history, manufacture, and value of this colorful art glass.

Carnival Glass History

In the late 19th century, Tiffany & Company and Steuben Art Glass produced a costly hand-blown iridized glass that was very popular with their wealthy clientèle. This glass was hand made and commanded extremely high prices. In 1907, the Fenton Art Glass Company began to mass-produce a high-quality and low-cost iridized glass, similar in appearance to the items crafted by Tiffany and Steuben. The Fenton iridized glass was available in numerous colors, including a unique red. Fenton was not the only manufacturer of iridized glass, but it was the largest producing the colorful glass in over 150 patterns.

Due to the economic hardships of the Great Depression, iridized glass lost its popularity. The inventory of this glassware was subsequently deeply discounted and commonly given away in cereal and supermarket promotions. In addition, the glassware was given away in carnival games, hence, the subsequent name Carnival Glass.

The popularity of iridized glass resurged in the 1950's with collectors and antique dealers and it was during this period that this glassware gained the name Carnival Glass. Today, Carnival Glass is still manufactured by Fenton, and several other companies.

Other Carnival Glass Manufacturers

Fenton, Northwood, Imperial Glass, Westmoreland and Dugan are just a few companies that have manufactured carnival glass. Some of these manufacturers stamped their pieces with a distinctive mark. However, most other manufacturers did not mark their goods leaving some vintage pieces impossible to authenticate. Today, because of high manufacturing costs, few of these manufacturers still remain.

What Is Carnival Glass Worth?

The vintage Carnival Glass manufactured early in the twentieth century is, by far, the most valuable, and sought after pieces. Color and condition play a large role in determining value. Chips, cracks, mold marks, repairs reduce the value. If an item is a rare color like aqua it is of more value than an item in marigold that is plentiful. The red Carnival Glass manufactured by Fenton is very rare, and often commands a very high price. Carnival Glass punch bowl sets, because they consist of multiple items, sell for a premium if complete with all pieces.

Traditional venues such as flea markets and antique shops have been the primary source for vintage carnival glass. Today, take a look at eBay for thousands of listings of both vintage and carnival glass at great prices. Remember, one persons trash is another persons treasure.

It is so ironic that at one point in time Fenton Carnival Glass was so common, it could hardly be given away. Today, some vintage pieces sell for thousands of dollars. However, if you spend some time looking for this beautiful glass, you are likely to find some real bargains.
