Different Oak Flooring Options Available Today

Author: Veronica Jewell

A walk to the local DIY store and you will immediately notice the wide range of flooring that is available for sale. These can range from the cheap and affordable, to the expensive and luxurious. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices available. So how do you come to the right decision? Which type of material will be most suitable for your flooring project? Here are some tips that you may find useful.

1) Solid wood flooring

Just a few short years ago, solid wood flooring seemed to be the most popular option. Perhaps this is because solid wood (like oak) tend to look more expensive, and they are certainly more durable. But the problem with such materials is that the wooden planks tend to be too thick. If there is nothing underneath the flooring, this type of wood would be perfect for the project, assuming that you have the budget for it. Solid wood will cost a lot more than other cheaper alternatives. But if you are considering installing floor heating systems beneath the flooring, solid materials may not be your best option. The thickness just occupies most of the space, leaving you very little to work with. In such cases, the other option will appear more attractive.

2) Engineered solid wood flooring

Engineered solid wood is very similar to pure solid wood in terms of properties and characteristics. Understanding the problems that solid materials create, innovative manufacturers have managed to find a way to process the wood such that it is not as thick. The top layer of the plank is glued to another type of wood. No one will notice that it is engineered wood after the project has been completed. This type of material is ideal for homes and offices with flooring heating systems.

3) Length makes a difference

The length of the floor planks make a difference. For example, it is easier to put together shorter planks, and smaller planks cost less. They also don't twist or warp easily under temperature changes. But the draw back is that they don't look as nice when fitted together. Longer planks are harder to put together, and they usually cost a little more. They have a higher tendency to twist compared to short planks. But if you hire professionals to install the flooring for you, twisting can be avoided. When the project is complete, long straight flooring pieces of wood can create the most beautiful and dramatic effect.

4) Floor finishing

Unless you are very knowledgeable about wood, it is better to leave the finishing to the professionals. If you really want to apply your own finishing, at least consult your local DIY store. You have to be a little cautious here because there are many types of finishing available in the market. They come as stains or varnishes, and you need to determine the type that is best suited for your project.

In general, there are 2 types of finishing to choose from. You can choose to change the surface appearance with wood stains, or you can choose to preserve the appearance by applying protecting varnishing, which is transparent.

Selecting the Perfect Oak Wardrobe

Author: jamiehanson

Living in a city means that you need to carry yourself well and wear good clothes and also look smart and better than the person next to you. For this, what would we require is a good wardrobe to keep all the clothes in one place and how does one find a good wardrobe! Simple, build one for yourself according to your own requirements! An oak wardrobe is the best solution for all the requirements because the oak furniture is a king if all times and offers the best any wood was to offer. So we shall see how having an oak wardrobe is the best thing to have. A lot of readymade oak wardrobes are available in the market, but they serve little purpose, because a wardrobe is a personal thing and everyone’s needs are different and so a general wardrobe would not be the answer. You should always opt for a custom made oak wardrobe and this decision would be the life maker as because you would never ever have to depend on things that fail or give way at the last moment. Oak is a steady crusader and always up to the mark and will never ever disappoint you. Oak furniture is the best in the business and an oak wardrobe is no exception. ‘The wardrobe is as good as the clothes inside’ is a term of the past, in today’s fast paced world, you need to have the exteriors as well as the interior up to the mark otherwise you can be considered out dated. So the oak wardrobe is the answer – it is stylish, easy to procure and comes in various colors. But these advantages are secondary; the primary advantage is that an oak wardrobe will outlast the clothes inside and can be used by generations. The oak wardrobe, because it is customized, comes in all sizes and shapes. For the executive class, it can be fitted with long vertical spaces to accommodate the suits and the ties and also be fitted with the vanity table on the inside of the wardrobe to make it easier for the women. The best part of an oak wardrobe is that you can fit it with anything and everything you want and the wardrobe will not suffer in the quality, or for the regular and average user, you can have it fitted with some big shelves and some horizontal shelves and also have a separate section for the footwear. But always remember that oak wardrobe will help you only if you allow it to, and unnecessary divisions will make the wardrobe look odd, so plan it out properly if you want the inside to be useful and look decent also. Oak wardrobe has so many more advantages that it is impossible to tell you about them all, it is like you have to experience it yourself to get the hang of it. So go ahead and buy an oak wardrobe and compliment it with more oak furniture and you will never ever complain about anything and love the compliments that would be showered on you.

How to Preserve the Artistic and Historical Value of Antiques

Author: Benedict Smythe

One of the most significant characteristic of any antique item is its age. Since antiques have been passed down from one generation to the next, these items easily undergo daily wear and tear. Thus, any antique item demands considerable care to preserve and protect its timeless value.

While a professional antique restorer is recommended for more intricate and detail-oriented method of antique restoration, you can also do your part to help maintain the artistic and historical value of your collection. Read on some tips on how to clean precious antique pieces.

Direct sunlight is a no-no for antique furniture. You should never display antique furniture in direct sunlight or beside air-conditioning or heating units. The heat that comes from these sources will deteriorate the fragile state of the antique piece. Place antique furniture in cool areas or better yet ask antique experts of how to properly display your piece. Note that different types of wood require different temperature to maintain its elegance.

Use soft, lint-free cloth for polishing. Soft and lint-free cloth should be used when polishing antique pieces. You should never polish antiques the way you may polish your modern pieces. Remember that antiques are old and can easily be torn, scratched or broken if mishandled.

Move antique furniture with care. Because of the furniture's sensitive condition, you should only move antique pieces when you really have to and only with utmost care. Otherwise, let the furniture stay in one corner of your house to lessen the probability of accidental breaking.

Use your hands when dealing with antique ceramics or glass. Cleaning antique ceramics and glass is quite simple just by using lint-free cloth for regular dusting. However, unlike antique furniture pieces, wearing protective gloves in handling antique ceramic and glass is not advisable. It is more appropriate to handle antiques of this type using your clean hands. It is good to know that sunlight and humidity would not affect the condition of some antique ceramics and glass. To determine sensitive antique items, you must seek the advice of an antique expert.

Store antique ceramics or glass in sturdy shelves. The most common problem with antique ceramic or glass is breakage. Therefore, extra care must be given in its storage. You must never place antique ceramic or glass in unstable cabinets. In case of accidental breakage, place each piece even the smallest one in acid-free tissue and bring to an experienced antique restorer. You must never repair damaged antique pieces on your own to avoid devaluation.

Regularly polish antique silver and metal pieces. Antique silver and metal items are extremely delicate. Antique items made from these materials can react to natural conditions and may result to corrosion, scratches, dents and fractures. Regular and proper cleaning through polishing with soft cloth will reduce the difficulty of maintaining the items' patina. You should use protective gloves when handling antique silver and metal to avoid tarnishing due to body sweat.

Store antique jewellery separately. Antique jewellery is extremely delicate. A piece of jewellery is possible to be made up of several types of precious stone or metal in which one would adversely affect each other through time. This is why you should not store several pieces of antique jewellery in just one box. Make sure that you have a separate box for each piece to avoid chemical reaction.

Hire the expertise of an antique jeweller. Small jewellery pieces make it almost impossible to clean, so an experienced jeweller specializing in antiques is recommended to handle these items.

Know Where and How to Shop For Antique Furniture Pieces

Author: Benedict Smythe

Many people go for antique furniture pieces primarily because of the elegance and style that it can provide to the interior ambiance of a house, an office or other areas. Prior to buying and collecting antique pieces however, the antique collector should first be equipped with knowledge as to where and how to shop. Below are some popular tips that should be considered:

Where to shop

a. It is best to buy antique furniture pieces from single owner shops or specialized antique stores than in antique shops that are in malls. Such will offer a more personal service at a more reasonable and affordable price. Specialized shops also offer a wider selection of choices.

b. In cases where the antique collector is looking for more affordable prices, the best places to go to are the flea markets and antique garage sales. Look for flea market or antique fair ads in the internet or in local print publications.

c. In case the antique collector is after antique items that are sold at highly discounted prices, he can opt to buy in sets or in bulk. He should also prefer buying from single-owner shops where he can directly negotiate the price with the owner.

d. One can also opt to buy antique furniture pieces in auctions. Doing so will provide the antique collector with the chance to save on the mark-up price of most antique shops. However, make sure that the auction house provides guarantees for its products.

What to check before buying the piece

a. Before buying any antique furniture piece, it is best to examine the history of the furniture. This background check includes the identification of its manufacturer, the year when it was manufactured, the hardware used for its construction, its previous owners and the like.

b. A thorough review of the process and schedule of previous maintenance procedures for the furniture piece should be made. Examine when it was last refurnished or restored. Identify who restored the piece and what restoration processes did he apply. Such will be useful in assessing the condition of the antique piece.

c. A systematic and meticulous inspection of the antique furniture piece should be made so as to determine if such is in good condition. The furniture should also be examined for any apparent signs that may indicate an immediate need for restoration and refinishing in the near future. Check if there are wormholes on the surface of the wood piece. Examine if there are saw marks visible on the surfaces, at the back of the chests, or under tables. There should also be no exposed cracks, scratches, and other disfiguring marks.

d. A close look on the styles, designs, and markings on the antique piece should be made in order to determine if the antique is an original piece or if it is just a reproduction. Examine the size of the surfaces and boards on tabletops and dressers. Examine the nails and wood pieces that were used in the piece and relate it with the history of furniture construction. Check if secondary wood are visible anywhere in the furniture's surface or in its inside drawers.

Oak Sideboards Are Beautiful , Oh Yes They Are!

Author: martin lowe

Oak Sideboards, whether you love them or hate them most homes have one or have had a sideboard over the years.

Sideboards have a slight stigma to them as being old fashion and that they are only found in old peoples houses, this just isn't true but the fact is the concept of the sideboard has been around for many years and people have used them in various shapes and forms over the last century.

The general use of the sideboard today is to have a piece of furniture that is good for storing away items but can also be used to display items on the top such as photos or even a flat LCD television.

The old fashion use of the sideboard was to use it to store the cutlery and china while the top of the sideboard would then be used as a serving surface, so the use has slightly changed to a more of a storage solution than serving of food at dinner.

Sideboards were usually placed in a diner room due to their original use but today they are generally placed at various placing around the house depending on the planned use for them.

Some people will buy a sideboard and have it in the

Living room for storage and displaying, even to store DVDs, glasses, books or similar.

Hallway or landing used for display particular fresh flowers which makes a lovely entrance to any home.

Dining Room – typically used to store dining wear and cutlery with the surface used to display photos, flowers or similar.

Sideboards are available in a number of different materials from Oak, mahogany to pine, and depending on the amount you wish to spend to the décor in your home will help you decide the material that is right for you.

Mahogany -  is a dark reddish hard wood that looks stunning and due to the colour you are limited to what décor the sideboard would suit , Mahogany is also expensive as it is a hard wood , but you do get what you pay for a this type of wood will last for many generations if looked after right.

Pine – Pine is a very light in colour wood and the grain can sometimes be very faint meaning the wood can seem very plain, but you can also get pine sideboards which have been stained or painted so you can match them up to your décor with different colours or different wood stains , these will also help preserve the wood.

Pine is a soft wood so is easily damaged or marked and will need a little more care , as a soft wood the pine sideboards will tend to be a little bit cheaper due to the wood they are made from.

Oak – can be various colours but sideboards are usually made with light oak, oak is beautiful and this is displayed in the grain of the wood with vivid patterns throughout, the grain can be brought to life with a wax applied with a cloth, rubbed into the wood in the same direction and NOT in a circular motion, but Oak sideboards are usually already treated and will require little looking after.

As Oak is a very hard wood, the wood itself can last for hundreds of years and this sort of furniture is usually past down each generation in a family, hence oak sideboards are a little more expensive.

Chest Of Drawer Maintenance

Author: Gareth Lewis

Whether you have a large or small bedroom there never seems to be enough storage space for all your personal and belongings.  However, a set of drawers are designed to store the most amount of items ranging from clothes through to jewellery and books in smallest amount of floor space possible.

The drawback about a unit of drawers is that the drawers can stick and scuff against the rails causing them to become stiff and difficult to open and close.  Modern drawers made from plastic and steel can use runners which use small wheels to run on.  These wheels can be incredibly useful and reliable.  If the do begin to stick and slow down you can simply use a regular lubricant such as grease or oil to renew the quick and easy movement which came when they first used.  However, wooden drawers use a hanging ledge cut into the side of drawer and second ledge which is stuck to the inside of the chest unit.  The drawer ledge sits on top of chest ledge and rub against one another as the drawer is open and shut.

This friction can cause the drawer to become very stiff and difficult and slow to open and close.  It can be caused by a series of different factors including knotted grains, deep scratches which can occur within the wood or even nails and staples which can be exposed after many years of use.

No matter what caused the friction to developing, resulting in the friction.  However it can solved by using either wax which can be applied to both drawer ledge and chest ledge or you can use a high gloss paint to apply a smooth layer over the grain of both ledges.  For people with carpentry skills you can also retrofit steel or plastic runners but this can damage the original qualities of piece of furniture.

In summary, a chest of drawers can offer an incredibly useful method of storing both clothes and personal items.  However, the drawers can become stuck causing them to become more difficult to open and close.  To resolve this you can simply use wax or paint.  So if you are becoming fed up with having to push and pull your drawers open and shut you can simply fix the problem using basic maintenance skills.
