Discount Furniture: The Worrisome Decision

Author: Amy

Discount furniture may be something you are considering purchasing. The lower price is calling to you. It would be nice to have a new table for your kitchen. And, it would be nice to be able to save a bundle on purchasing it from this retailer rather that that one. But, should you purchase furniture that is on sale or somehow other marked down? There are many things that can be put in front of you with a lower price that can be excellent purchases. They could be excellent quality products. Or, they could be very poor quality products. The only way that you will know this is to look for the details.

It is up to you to learn the quality of the product before you purchase it. The good news is that there are a number of ways that you can do this, easily. You don't have to worry about becoming a victim to the age old, "you get what you pay for" song and dance. TO help you to make the right decisions about the discount furniture that you are purchasing, consider these tips. Remember, it doesn't have to be a bad thing.

1. Learn about the quality of the piece. No matter what type of furniture you are purchasing, you want to look at the quality of the piece. Is it solid? Does it provide for a strong frame? How is the frame secured? If it is glued together, it is anything but strong. Look at the details of the piece for the quality that it can and should offer. Beyond everything else, this is essential to consider.

2. Learn about the maker. You can learn a lot about the quality of a product by learning more about the maker of the furniture, which is not always the location you purchase it from. Use the Better Business Bureau's website for guidance. Or, you can look for reviews from other consumers online. Don't assume that a piece of furniture is worth the quality until you know a bit about the maker of it.

3. Look for a warranty. A good product should come to you with some type of warranty. Some retailers assume that a 30 day warranty is enough, but that's not the case in quality furniture. Look for a warranty that will cover any damages to the piece for at least a year, if not more. FI they are willing to provide a warranty, you know they are confident of the quality of their work and product.

If you do want to find discount furniture but you want to make sure it fits with the needs and necessary features that you need, take into consideration the various types of furniture on the market and shop around. Find the pieces that you enjoy and then look from one company to the next to find the right price. Always take into consideration the elements mentioned above for each one though. Nevertheless, you will find a quality product with a bit of help and research in this manner.

Reupholstering Simple Dining Chairs

Author: James Hunt

After many years of being sat upon, the chairs around the table often become ugly as their padding wears out. Nothing is quite as embarrassing to a home owner as realizing that his or her guests must sit on chairs with the stuffing coming out. This problem can be remedied, however, with a little time and some simple, inexpensive items from the local fabric and hardware stores.

Turn your chairs over, and you might notice that the fabric covering the chair is stapled in place. By removing the fabric, you've made the first step. This can be done by removing the staples, or by cutting the fabric around the staples.

Next, measure the dimensions of the chairs for the fabric to use as covering. When buying the fabric, choose a durable fabric that is relatively easy to clean. Also, make sure to leave at least an extra foot for each side of the chair. This ensures that there is enough fabric to fit over the padding and enough to be anchored to the bottom of the chair. It's better to have too much than not enough. You can always trim the excess.

Choose padding that is durable as well. Foam padding works well. Most large fabric and craft specialty shops sell padding that is especially designed for upholstery. A little extra padding is a good idea for each of the chairs as well.

After buying the supplies (don't forget to buy a staple gun and staples at the hardware store—a clerk should be able to help you find what you need), trace a pattern, using the chairs, on some good poster board. This pattern will be used to properly cut out the padding.

Using a pencil, and the pattern, trace a guide on the padding. As you cut the padding into the proper shape for placement on the chairs, it is a good idea to leave half an inch to an inch. When the fabric is pulled tight over the padding and chairs, the extra will ensure that the entire seat is covered.

Next, place the fabric, design side down, spread out on the floor. Place the padding in the middle of the fabric. Next, match the seats of the chairs to the padding. Bring up the sides, so that they are ready to be stapled to the underside of the chairs. The task can be made easier with help. Pull the fabric tight, but not so tight that there isn't any give, and staple the fabric. Trim any excess fabric.

Finally, turn the chairs right-side up and place them around the table. It looks like a fresh new room, and you did it by yourself!

Frances Elkins - A Famous American Interior Decorator and Designer

Author: Innes Desborough

Frances Adler Elkins was one of those legendary decorators of the early 20th century and was renowned for her inspired designs. Elkins was born in 1888 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is the younger sister of the celebrated Chicago architect David Adler (1882-1949). David Adler was an architect specialized in the French architecture movement know as The Beaux Arts, and both Adler and Elkins worked together in Chicago and the Bay Area from the 1920s to 1930s. Some of her works in the Bay Area includes interior designing of Yerba Buena Club at the Golden Gate International Exposition and the 1939 fair at Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. Her designs integrate the prevailing style of various places with changing timeline in history, and ranges from country French to Chinoiserie to art deco.

In the beginning she was influenced by the works of Jean-Michel Frank who is a French interior and furniture designer, and Alberto Giacometti, a sculptor who designed fixtures. She promoted these designers through her California-based interior design business established in 1918.

Elkin's career started when she and her husband Felton moved to Monterey, California where they purchased the historic abode Casa Amesti and transformed it into a masterpiece in architecture with their diverse architectural styles and periodic transformations. She showed exceptional talent in interior designs with classical details such as a dentil cornice and fluted door casings being added to the plastered wall and plank ceilings of the residence. Elkins had her own design principles which she tried first in the dwelling itself by arranging various English, French and Chinese furnishings on the polished redwood floors. She had a special affection for white, blue and yellow colors.

Elkin's creativity was enhanced by her friends who often urged her to decorate their homes. Her initial masterpieces include the clubhouse of Cypress Point Club which she designed in 1930. The same period saw her reputation spreading to San Francisco where she was the chosen interior designer for the city's famous families such as the Haases and the Zellerbachs. The Zellerbach mansion in Broadway contains some of Elkin's original designs. She was one of the architects among the trio who was elected by the San Francisco society. Her interior design works have influenced designers such as Michael Taylor.

Her usage of colors within her interior design schemes were accepted with great enthusiasm during the early periods of the twentieth century, due to the unique style and fineness she had incorporated into her works.  Her contemporary furnishings have the combination of fine antiques blended into them and the combination set a trend in the 'eclectic' style which had become popular ever since. Her designs stood ahead of the time they were designed and attract art lovers even today.

Antiquing in Rhinebeck, Ny

Author: Leaftech

Rhinebeck New York, located in Dutchess County in the beautiful Mid-Hudson Valley has some wonderful antique shops.

Whether you are looking for fine English antiques, artwork, collectibles, vintage jewelry, pottery, porcelain or any other item prized by collectors you can find it in the antique shops of Rhinebeck, NY.

It was a beautiful day today in Rhinebeck so my husband and I took a stroll through all of the great shops.  We are collectors of artwork, porcelain and carnival glass. We had an enjoyable time as we strolled through town and spoke to all of the friendly shop owners and searched for new treasures for our collections.

The Beekman Arms Antique Market is located in a red barn directly behind the Beekman Arms Inn.  The Inn is reputed to be the oldest continuously run inn in America.  The Beekman Arms Antique Market is a group shop with everything a collector could want.  They have furniture, glass, pottery, art work, textiles, and jewelry along with pretty much everything else.  The shop is open 7 days a week from 11AM - 5PM.  They can be reached at (845) 876-3477.

Across the street from the Beekman Arms is Asher House Antiques.  This beautifully done shop specializes in English antique furniture.   Fresh merchandise arrives from England on a regular basis. In addition to fine furniture, porcelain, sterling and assorted antique items, they have beautiful accessories - both old and new - for your home. The shop also carries a beautiful line of reproduction furniture. The shop is open 7 days a week from 10 AM - 5:30 PM.  They can be contacted at (845) 876-1794.

On the corner of Route 9 and West Market street is the Rhinebeck Antiques & Artisans.  This is a showcase shop with about 40 cases of wonderful small antique items.  When I was in the shop this week I saw an impressive collection of Roseville and American Beleek on display. There is fresh merchandise almost daily. Loman Eng, one of the owners is also an artist.  Loman paints wonderful landscapes and these are available for purchase also. The center is open Thursday through Monday from 10:30 AM - 5:30 PM.  The phone number at the center is (845) 876-5555.

Right next door to the Rhinebeck Antique and Artisans is The Portly Pug.  This is a small, cozy shop filled with wonderful treasures of all kinds. The Portly Pug is named after Picabo, Myron's (the  proprietor’s) pet. There is a wonderful collection of dog related antiques, a selection of beautiful tea caddies and fine antique furniture just to name a few things.  The shop is generally open Friday through Mondays from about 11 AM – 5 PM.  It is a good idea to call ahead as the hours vary.  They can reached at (845) 876-6896.

All the shops are just a few steps away from each other but each one has its own unique charm.  Come spend a morning or afternoon browsing the antique shops in Rhinebeck...you never know what treasure you might find!

Happy Hunting!

Aubusson and Needlepoint Magic

Author: Gina Cartwright

What is special about Aubusson rugs – quite a lot really !!!

The rugs are steeped in 300 years of history with a reputation for the highest standard of craftsmanship and quality.

I’ll explain to you about the history, and the method of production and also the reason why they can make your home feel like a palace.

Maybe like myself you have walked around stately homes and gasped at the beautiful architecture of the plaster ceilings, it was a few years ago when I did this myself and then I looked down and realized that the extremely large rug on the floor mirrored the ceiling and that it had all been handsewn over 100years ago - it took my breath away, when I looked at the colours, designs and the fine needlecraft. This was when I realized that I wanted to know more about these rugs. I now consider myself very privileged to liaise with expert weavers, interior designers and customers in a process that unites together to provide the customer with a bespoke handsewn rug based on beautiful aubusson designs.

Firstly I will explain the name Aubusson. If you have difficulty pronouncing Aubusson – try this method – pronounce the AU as O and add a little magic of a French accent and your almost there.

The French accent is quite important as the name is from a small French medieval town on the banks of the river Creuse. In the 16th century this town became the capital of French tapestry and rug making. The rugs became large fine crafted tapestries that were hand stitched in a flat weave, in fact they became so renowned and desirable that in 1665, Louis XIV awarded the title of “Manufacture Royale des tapisseries d’Aubusson” to all the Aubusson towns weavers. Even a royal court painter was appointed to assist in the designs, in this era of history the subjects would usually be based on biblical stories or historic events.

A change happened in the rug patterns when the style of Baroque became popular, it was an extravagant and romantic style with many flowers and scrolls as part of the designs. It began to be used in the architecture of decorative ceilings and wall panels in grand houses.  This was followed by the Rococo period of design. Rococo was also a decorative style favoured in interior design, painting, and building design. Rococo was formed from a new period of thought within society were the formality of previous years changed and became based on the pursuing  of personal amusement and happiness. The movement with its idyllic and charming approach to design was also represented by the artist Francois Boucher, who created paintings and designed tapestries for the French royalty and nobility.

The movement portrayed the life of the aristocracy, using themes of romance, mythology, fantasy and everyday life rather than the old designs of historical events and religion. The style was light, ornamental, elaborate, and very curvy in designs. Other elements of the style included graceful movement and delicate use of colouring. making it right for interior decoration. The Rococo style was also used in art, furniture and tapestry design. It is sometimes considered to be the end of the Baroque period.

The Aubusson weavers designed rugs with Rococo features of flowers and intricate scrolls woven in delicate pretty colours and so was born the legacy of ‘Aubusson’ which has remained till this day.

Today credit for these beautiful rugs are the combination of a very skilled and dedicated workforces. Starting with the artist and stylist who produces the sketch, which form the complicated rug designs these are called ‘cartoon’s’ they are used by the diligent weavers. Then there is the wool dyer who arranges the wools and colour palette required for the design, and of course the expert weaver who will complete the tapestry. each process carried out by experts. The Aubusson colour palettes are usually all muted colors that blend easily with the surrounding decors there can be up to 60 different colors and shades of wool in the larger rugs. This demonstrates the complexity of the designs.

As you might imagine in todays market the labour involved to make these exceptional rugs is still extensive. This is why they are not mass produced. Whether these rugs are made in France or from further afield the craftsmanship is commendable and exceptional.

The palatial traditional designs always scream quality and can be used in a modern setting as the focal point of a room or in a traditional timeless setting. The flatweave means that they keep there look well, and will last many years.Maybe even turning into an heirloom that can be passed through generations like the French antique rugs.

By cutting down on my overheads I am able to offer all our customers the very best price for the rugs they order.

If you would like to walk into a room where your rug has been made especially for you in a timeless design and subtle colors then Aubusson designed rugs are for you. If you want further advise then please give me a call or email me at Gina@needlepointrugs.co.uk
