Beer Boot

Author: andrew

Many of you may be asking what exactly a beer boot is. What's the history behind them?

Beer boots or Bierstiefeln in German have over a century of history and culture behind them. It is commonly believed that a general promised his troops to drink beer from his boot if they were successful in battle. When the troops prevailed, the general had a glassmaker fashion a boot from glass to fulfill his promise without tasting his own feet and to avoid spoiling the beer in his leather boot. Since then, soldiers have enjoyed toasting to their victories with a beer boot. At gatherings in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, beer boots are often passed among the guests for a festive drinking challenge. Since the movie Beer Fest appeared in 2006, Beer Boots have become increasingly popular in the United States. Originally most commonly seen in the German Restaurant and Bier Garten (Beer Garden) scene in the US, they have become a party essential at college campuses across the nation. Beer boots are made of either manufactured pressed glass or mouth blown glasses by skilled artisans in form of a boot. They come in a wide array of sizes, and we carry the largest variety. For drinking groups in particular, the larger beer boots, especially the two liter, are the favored option.

When drinking in a group, the boot is passed around in a circle and a game is played to determine who pays for the next beer. The second to last person to drink is the loser and has to purchase the next beer. Therefore, there are two strategies to the game. One either tries to finish the boot in one drink without it spilling any, or one drinks as little ones as possible and hopes that the next person in line doesn’t try to drink the boot empty.

The shape of the boot makes drinking more difficult. As you drink down the beer and tilt the boot backwards at an angle, an air pocket fills in the toe and has to be cautiously released. The trick to drinking from the boot is to hold the boot so that the toe is pointed either to your left or right, preventing an air bubble from building up in the toe.

As Restaurant you can profit from offering beer in beer boots to your guests:

* Guests drink higher quantity of beer, resulting in higher profits.

* Guests entertain and amuse themselves.

* Because of the larger quantity of beer, they have to be refilled less and result in less work

As a restaurant or bar purchaser, before you buy beer boot glasses, you should try out whether they fit appropriately under your beer tap for filling. If necessary you can fill a beer jug and transfer the beer into the boot; however, the some head is lost in the transfer process.

Beer boot glasses are inherently more expensive than other glasses, because of their labor intensive mouth blown production process, their high demand, and the fact that they are imported from Europe.

Beer Boots are very popular pieces of collecting breweriana and make the perfect gift for college students, your everyday beer fan and are increasingly popular as groomsman gifts for weddings.

Collecting Antique Porcelain Dolls

Author: Ricky Lim

There are so many things you can learn about antique porcelain dolls. There is a lot of history behind these toys which are collections for some people. The history of their seamstresses, manufactures, and creators are very interesting. Even how children played with antique porcelain dolls are worth reading about. The prices of antique porcelain dolls depend on their history.

Nowadays, antique porcelain dolls are quite expensive, that's why collectors only get what they think are worth their money. It seems like they are alright with a couple of antique porcelain dolls instead of getting the current fashion dolls.

However, a student would invest a lot of time and money to collect both. But there are still people who are drawn to collecting antique porcelain dolls because they want to know more about these toys.

Antique porcelain dolls were created before 1930. They could be bisque, papier mache, wax, wood, or china, but they are all categorized as antique porcelain dolls. All the composition of the dolls were said to be modern and as the years progress, they tend to show these through their costumes.

Dolls that were manufactured way before 1930 are also said to be antique porcelain dolls but it is hard to determine when exactly they were made because the clothing is not original. Unfortunately, the antique porcelain dolls that are manufactured today are not exactly authentic because these do not have the original wigs, clothing, undergarments and shoes.

The early antique porcelain dolls were made in the 1850s. These dolls represented the adults circa 17th and 18th century. Collectors search far and wild for these items. Most early antique porcelain dolls were manufactured in England. Craftsmen individually crafted and carved these dolls on wood. The features were painted. Costumes were added.

Collectors include the early antique porcelain dolls in their collection primarily because of their rarity. They are willing to invest in these – especially the “Queen Anne.” The Queen Anne is an early antique porcelain dolls version that was made during that time.

Wax dolls are also popular for collectors of antique porcelain dolls. The earlier, the better – just like for any material construction of antique porcelain dolls. Even the construction of these dolls are made into account. Wax dolls are a hit for collectors because of the intricacy of its creation. Take note that the wax dolls were owned by the wealthy.

They were made by pouring liquid into warm molds. The hair and the features were already set in the head. During that time, making wax dolls were for home-based businesses because of the dangers of actually making these.

Antique Spike Nails - Using Vintage and Antique Nails

Author: Kohn Coleman

The history of nails dates back thousands of years and throughout time their purpose has remained the same – fastening and joining two pieces of lumber together. Originally each nail was made by hand from heated iron ore and then cut and shaped during cooling. The first evidence of large scale nail making dates back to the Roman Empire where blacksmiths in fortresses would make nails by the thousands. Nails were so valuable that later American colonists would burn down abandoned buildings to collect the nails left behind in the ashes. It wasn’t until the 1600’s the first machine was created to automate the nail making process but even then it could still only produce one nail at a time. It wasn’t until the early 1800’s that nail making became a more efficient process and that nails became available in different sizes.

Spike Nails, AntiqueUsing antique reproduction spike nails in your home is a wonderful and timeless addition. Not only are these nails extremely durable but they add a sense of history to any room. This is especially important in restoration projects where using nails similar to the originals is vital to preserve the integrity of the original architectural style. Available in a variety of sizes, nails use a small “d” to designate length (although the d was originally used to designate price per hundred). Today nails are typically sold per pound, not by count.

Antique reproduction spike nails are produced today - allowing you to incorporate them easily into your home. When choosing spike nails for your home, be sure to follow a few simple steps. First, select a size and finish appropriate for your project. Nails are available in a standard or galvanized (protects against corrosion) finishes.  Second, replace the older and worn hardware in your home with new doorknob sets, window hardware and lighting to create a common theme. By using iron hardware on your doors, windows and cabinets you can tie the look together. Consult home decorating catalogs or an interior designer if you have additional questions.

Antique spike nails are readily available online as well as in many home decorating catalogs. Search for solid iron construction and be sure to ask questions. Nails are available in a variety of styles and not all nails are meant for the same projects. These antique spike nails are available online through LookInTheAttic & Company and they offer free design assistance and help.

New Styles and Finishes in Sideboards and Designer Furniture

Author: T Mahony

There are many styles and locations to consider when purchasing your new sideboard. Sideboards from made in Italy as part of designer furniture collections can have a touch of old world class, and Italian furniture is renowned throughout the world. Sideboards made in Portugal or Spain also have old world flair, with new modern designs. Where ever you choose to buy your sideboard from, you will find distinct differences that can enhance your dining room and give you elegance in extra table space and storage.

In addition to the tradition wooden or white sideboard, you may want to add a touch of sleek elegance with a black sideboard. They can come in many different finishes. Lacquer black finishes can come in a glossy finish or be ordered to have a matte finish. Keep in mind your specific needs. Perhaps, you may consider a matte finish for high traffic areas where fingerprints would accumulate regularly and not show as well as it would on a glossy finish. A glossy finish on your sideboard would be best for a showy dining room where only the fanciest of suppers would be served.

A glass sideboard might suit your needs when shopping for a sideboard. You might find that you want to display some of your most prized china of have something to brag about while having supper in the dining room. Some of the new designer sideboards have glass that is painted, or mirrored, and not designed to be see through. There are several Designer furniture collections from Italy that include glass sideboards in unusual finishes, just search for 'designer furniture' online and you should easily find beautiful Italian furniture & sideboards.

Make sure the style of the legs and the round or the sharp curves of your new sideboard matches the rest of your dining room furniture. Sometimes different colour furniture can complement each other if the craft styles match, but most of the designer furniture ranges that have sideboards also have matching dining tables, dining chairs, or living room furniture (if the sideboard is going to be put in the living room), so you could have matching designs if you want.

Sideboard furniture shopping can be a rewarding experience but make sure you can get what you are looking for by shopping around online and in person at local retailers. Quality varies a great deal, and Italian furniture is rightly considered to be the best. Make sure you are buying a reputable brand, from a good supplier, as a cheap finish will not last. You may not want to splash out on designer furniture, and you can still buy very nice furniture that isnt designer.

When shopping for a sideboard, remember the whole of the style in your dining room, that is, unless you are ready to purchase brand new furniture for your entire dining room! Quality is very important, but its also important that your new sideboard fits in with your decor, otherwise it will not be an investment you are happy with.

The Use Of Fairy Lights In Interior Design

Author: Thomas Pretty

While you may just think to use fairy lights at Christmas to decorate the tree they are increasingly being used in interior design, especially in bedrooms. The importance of lighting has long been known in the interior design world and fairy lights are rapidly being used as the decorative light form of choice for designers. Light can bring ambiance and set a mood with the flick of a switch, understandably, more decorative forms of lighting are becoming popular.

For a young girl's room it is easy to see the appeal of fairy lights, as finishing touches they are unsurpassed at creating a space that is not only relaxing but aesthetically pleasing as well. Many young girls love to have a storybook wonderland to escape to, along with decorative furniture and tasteful wall adornments fairy lights can really make the look. In addition to the decoration however is the vital importance of a comfortable bed. Making sure that it has opulent sheets, naturally in pink shades and plenty of pillows ensure that bed time for your little girl is never a problem.

It is not just young girl's rooms that can benefit from the installation of fairy lights. Increasingly even in adult rooms they are becoming a popular lighting option. It is easy to underestimate the mood created by lighting, but a set of fairy lights behind a thin sheet can create a decorative feature that is a talking point as well as a source of light. By utilising this method you can create unbelievable levels of ambience that is hard to achieve in a room with normal lighting, the subtle shades and shadows created by fairy lights are a strong design feature.

Lighting generally falls into three varieties in terms of interior design; these are natural light, accent lighting and task lighting. The skill of great lighting design is to make the best use of all three to create a room that can be lit for any purpose. Making the most of natural light is one of the most important weapons in the interior designer's arsenal. Particularly useful in this task is to maximise the light by hanging mirrors and to remove excessively heavy curtains from window frames. In addition, most designers will advise homeowners to trim any bushes or trees outside a window to let in as much light as possible.

Accent lighting is where fairy lights come in, it is primarily used in design to highlight certain features in a room and to define the general lighting already present. Important is to realise which parts of the room you want highlighting and to experiment with various lighting patterns before you have found the perfect solution. Fairy lights however can be used as lighting features in their own right. By using smaller variants and wrapping them around plants, vases or even the underside of a mantelpiece you can create a feature that at night, literally shines.

Fairy lights are not particularly suited to task lighting due to their generally subtle brightness. Instead it is more advisable to use table lamps, spot lights in a kitchen or desk lamps. Having light to perform tasks is extremely important so you do not have to put your eyes under excessive strain. These lights while adding to ambience should not be a feature and purely used to light an area when performing a task.

By understanding the importance of light in creating mood and ambience you can make any room in your house stylish and comfortable. As an inexpensive form of lighting fairy lights can help create this, remember to buy specialist lights however, the Christmas lanterns you hang on the tree every year are hardly suited to the purpose.

Tips on Home Improvement Remodeling

Author: danyy

Are you bored of the atmosphere of your existing home? Do you wish a change? Home improvement remodeling is a great way to change your surroundings and make your home look like a new one. Your first step in remodeling your home is visiting nicely built houses that you can visit. Through which you can gather a good deal of ideas. Magazines and websites too can suggest you a lot about remodeling with minimal expenses. Planning comes next, a permutation & combination of the gathered ideas and the expenses and of course, the environment you have always wanted would help you in arriving at a suitable plan that meets your aesthetic needs as well as your budget.

Tips on Exteriors

While improving the curb appeal, you should pay attention to the external color of your home. Create a front yard garden to make the home look friendly and welcoming. As natural materials impress more than the artificial ones, consider using natural materials that are very popular right now. Focus on small details, such as, the color of your front door, decorative elements that escalate the frontage, lightings, fountains, and the like. While improving curb appeal and maintaining it may require some effort, it could provide you with the best change of environment of your home. Involving every family member in the job could be of great fun. Apart from the great looks, you will have added a great value to your home.

Revamping Interiors

When it comes to interiors, it includes every room in your house. While interior decorators can do a great job for your home improvement remodeling, you can also do it yourself. Device a plan so that the color scheme, style, atmosphere complements your windows, ceiling, walls, furniture, etc. With wise kitchen remodeling ideas, you can make your kitchen a completely different room without major expenses. Replacing your old style with modular kitchens will be a little costly but can make you feel as if in a new environment.

Cost of remodeling bathrooms too can be as high or as low as you want them to be. If you want your bathroom to be a glamour room, you will need to spend quite a lot on the accessories as well as flooring and on tiles. To be economical, you can use some of your old bathroom furniture by just painting and polishing that gives a new look. This will help you save a lot of money.

Household storage is an absolute necessity for your home to keep it clutter free and well organized. You can consider some of the various elegant home storage products available on the neighboring market or through the internet. Storage plays a crucial part in serving to retain a tidy home and to keep items where they can be easily found at times of need. While choosing storage products, be sure that they match the other elements of your home.

Building A Solar Panel - How To - Measure Volts, Amps, Watts Of A Solar Panel

Author: Bret Parker

When building a solar panel or looking for a solar panel, you should always know the final wattage, volts, and amps that you want the solar panel to generate.

Solar electricity is generated from do it yourself solar power panels connected in series or parallel to form a home solar power system

Your solar panel should always use the same size and same type of solar cells to keep the power consistent.

Larger solar cells produce more amps, and smaller cells produce fewer amps and the watts are lower.

This is why it is important to make sure that you build solar panels that are similar in wattage, amps, and voltage output - and here is how you do it!

Step 1

Solar panels are measured in power - Watts, volts, and amps.

When determining the overall wattage of a solar panel we use this simple equation:

Watts equals Volts multiplied by Amps.

You can use this table to find volts, amperage, and wattage if you know any two of the three variables.

Solar cells create about.5 volts of DC electricity – regardless of physical size. The only thing that changes with the size of a solar cell is current. (AMPS).

Commercially available solar cell 3 inches by 6 inches output is more than likely rated at .5 volts with 3 amps of electricity.

Split a solar cell into two equal halves, each solar cell would be rate at .5 volts and 1.5 amps each. Volts stay the same, but amps changes with solar cell size.

 CALULATIONS FOR SIZE

Determine how many solar cells to make a 60 watt solar panel.
We know that our 3 x 6 solar cells are .5 volts and have 3.3 amps. So we take 60 watts divided by 3.3 to get our overall solar panel voltage.

60watts divided by 3.3 amps equals 18 volts.

Solar panel voltage is 18 volts so we can find out just how many solar cells we need?

Solar Panel Voltage divided by single solar cell voltage equals the Number of cells needed per panel
so now we take 18 volts divided by .5 volts it equals 32 solar cells.

This means that we will need to wire these solar cells together in series to achieve the 18 volts.

SOLAR ARRAY

Commercial solar panel array systems consist of individual solar panels being connected in series to produce higher wattage.

For example, a 180 watt, 3.6 amp solar panel array system may consist of three 60 watt, 3.6 amp solar panels connected together in a series - 180 watts.

You achieve higher voltage by connecting solar panels in series.

All the information to make or build your own home made do it yourself solar panels to generate free home domestic solar electricity is explained in the package.

Great Cars I Remember

Author: Pierre Verte

There is no doubt in my mind that a car can be a work of art, and even more so when there is an individual behind it.

Most people identify with men like Enzo Ferrari, W.O. Bentley, Ettore Bugatti - they all started with nothing and stuck passionately to their individual vision. It shows in their work.

The Bugatti is a perfect example. Made by an Italian family of artists and sculptors, the Bugatti cars still take the breath away. Ettore Bugatti received classical art instruction, then taught himself engineering and began building racing cars.

Aesthetics seemed to be as important to him as technology. His cars have boldly styled bodies, and even the engines look like modern sculptures. The Antlantique was designed by his son Jean in 1936, but as it nears age 60 it still looks as futuristic as ever. Jean Bugatti was killed in a car crash and his father lost his business during the war, but their artistic cars remain as their legacy.

The Antlantique is like no shape I've ever seen - with rounded contours, and a studded seam along the top, it's truly a remarkable vision.  On a race track today, it can still do 100 mph without any trouble at all.

Only three of these cars were ever built. One was demolished when it got stuck at a railway crossing. Ralph Lauren, the fashion designer, owns the second and I don't know where the third one is, if it exists at all. I have only seen pictures of the car, and that was enough to start my heart racing.

When a young man grows up in North America I think it is unusual for him not to be car crazy. I can remember vividly to this day all the cars my father had from the time I was ten years of age. There was a 1940's Hudson coupe, a 1946 Dodge sedan, a 1949 Mercury, a 1954 Buick Century with the port holes on the side of the hood, and so on...

In those days I would sit with my friends and count the cars that went by. "Look, there goes a Studebaker"; "There's an Olds"; "There's a Lincoln".  Now most cars look alike. If they didn't have the small individual logos on the trunk I wouldn't be able to tell a BMW from a Toyota Camry. There are, of course, exceptions, and most of those fall within the sports car world.

I remember fondly my own cars of the past. In the 1950's it was a Triumph TR3 and in the 1960's it was a 1963 Stingray Corvette, with the slat in the back window.

There's nothing like waking up on a nice sunny day, and going for a drive on a country road, and putting a good sports car through its paces.

The pleasure is not about trying to go fast - it's the feeling of handling a thoroughbred: the way it comes around a corner, the way the mechanism feels when you shift, and, of course, the roar of the engine.

Each of the great cars that I remember from the past had a distinctive character. I can readily call to mind the Alfa Romeo, the little Morgan, the Long-nosed D-type Jaguar, the Porsche 356 Roadster - some of the most beautiful cars in the world.

Now cars are sold at auction just like works of art, and the prices they command are getting higher and higher. As they become expensive antiques I hope all of them don't get taken off the road. It would be sad to see them all locked up in large storage vaults or glass cases - after all, they were designed to be driven!
